FAQS (Frequently Asked Questions)
Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions — or at least the questions people were brave enough to ask out loud. Answers are provided to the best of our ability, though certain librarians may dispute the accuracy and… we may or may not have accidentally summoned “something” while answering. Proceed with curiosity and mild caution.
Who is Scott Hawkins?
Scott R. Hawkins is the author of The Library at Mount Char, a cult‑favorite blend of dark fantasy, cosmic horror, and razor‑sharp wit. Before writing fiction, he spent years as a Linux engineer and technical author — which explains his fascination with systems, logic, and the occasional apocalypse. Blacktail, his second novel, will be released in the fall of 2026.
Why does Scott write such strange, dark stories?
He’s drawn to the edges of things — the places where logic breaks, myths misbehave, and characters make terrible decisions for fascinating reasons. Also, he finds dark humor irresistible.
Will there ever be a sequel to The Library at Mount Char?
There are no current plans, but Scott has said he knows “what happens next.” Whether he ever writes it is between him and the universe.
Is The Library at Mount Char based on real events?
We certainly hope not. If it is, someone should probably alert the authorities.
Is The Library at Mount Char part of a series?
No — it’s a standalone novel. But readers often insist it feels like a universe with hidden doors, and Scott has hinted that he may return to that world someday… if the librarians allow it.
Does Scott outline his books or just let chaos take the wheel?
Both. He outlines meticulously, then the characters ignore him and do whatever they want. It’s a system that works disturbingly well.
Does Scott really love dogs as much as people say?
Yes. Possibly more. Dogs have played a significant role in his life, almost all his life. He has rescued more than and handful and it wouldn't be unuasual for there to be dogs in double digits.
Does Scott have a favorite character from his own work?
He claims he doesn’t play favorites, but certain characters seem to follow him around longer than others. Make of that what you will.
Does Scott Have a New Book?
Yes, he is excited to share that Blacktail will be released coming Fall, 2026.
So... what is Blacktail about?
Blacktail is Scott’s long‑awaited new novel, coming soon. It’s a tense, atmospheric story about wilderness, memory, and the intelligence lurking in the dark. More details will be revealed as publication approaches.
Is Blacktail connected to The Library at Mount Char?
No — Blacktail is older. Much older. It was written long before Mount Char, quietly shelved, and never expected to resurface. Its revival brings with it the usual Hawkins signatures: strange atmospheres, sharp edges, and a cosmic side‑eye or two.
